KEITH CHVAL is co-founder of
Protek International, a computer forensics, litigation support and investigations firm, and specializes in high-tech issues as a member of the law firm Ekl Williams PLLC. Chval capped 13 years as a prosecutor by establishing and supervising the Illinois Attorney General’s High Tech Crimes Bureau. He also is an adjunct professor at The John Marshall Law School. He, his wife and their five children enjoy traveling to a wide range of destinations.

JON MACKEY is manager of IT at OnlineBenefits, in Uniondale, N.Y. He’s responsible for all day-to-day IT issues, including networks, Internet infrastructure, purchasing and “uptime” for Web-hosted products. “Our business thrives on uptime,” he says. “To ensure this, we need vendors who work at the speed of business.” He began his career in computers in retail sales, only to realize that he liked “tinkering more than selling.”
KIM MILLER has been chief financial officer at Marina Administration near Phoenix for four years and considers technology a major tool in her job. Miller has overseen technology projects that support day-to-day business, from installing VoIP for the company’s five offices and implementing point-of-sale software to unveiling wireless Internet. “We are pretty high tech for a company that runs a marina,” Miller says. “As an accountant, you are always working with technology.” Miller was introduced to IT when she was studying accounting at Arizona State University in Tempe.
JOHN PINNA is the vice president, technology, at OnlineBenefits, where he sets strategy, implements technology and heads the company’s information technology and internal development teams. He is an expert in the architecture of corporate and hosting technology infrastructure, internetworking and voice and data systems integration.
KEN RICHARDSON is vice president of MIS technical services at Cenlar, a wholesale bank in Ewing, N.J. Richardson has been an information technology professional for 15 years, with experience in hardware, database programming, Windows and Novell networking and IT management. LUCAS ROH is founder, president and CEO of Hostway, a Chicago provider of Web hosting services and online business tools. He has overseen the company’s growth to include the hosting of more than 100,000 Web sites. Before founding Hostway, Roh was a computer scientist at Argonne National Laboratory, where he conducted pioneering research in the emerging field of automatic differentiation—the incorporation of computer technologies into mathematics. He also has worked for several companies, including Hewlett-Packard and Tektronics, doing software and hardware engineering. And, Hostway is not his first foray into launching a business: In the late 1980s, he founded the software company Wavetech.
MIKE SACCO is the vice president of operations at Hickok & Boardman Financial Planning & Group Benefits in Burlington, Vt. An avid skier, and father of two sons and three daughters, Sacco lives with his family in rural Vermont, midway between Burlington and the slopes of Smugglers’ Notch. During his career, he has been a corporate accountant, financial analyst, corporate controller, general manager and vice president of operations, but in every instance has had information technology responsibilities, both hands-on and in management roles.
THOMAS SALZMAN, IT manager at Greenspoon, Marder, Hirschfeld, Rafkin, Ross & Berger in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is in charge of buying hardware and software related to the firm’s timeshare law practice. “Narrowing down how the world outside can access your corporate computer system is the first step in securing it,” he says.
THOMAS J. SMEDINGHOFF is a partner in the Chicago law firm Wildman Harrold, where he focuses on the law of electronic transactions and information security. He is the author of three books on technology law and served as a member of the U.S. Delegation that recently completed negotiation of an international treaty known as the United Nations Convention on the Use of Electronic Communications in International Contracts.
